the battle for the circle
The first snow fall of the year, beautiful when untouched but dangerous on a college campus.
I was walking back to my dorm after supper, when I see above me a crowd of people tossing snowballs down an alley. I watch for a few minutes, surveying the scene for someone familiar. My friend Robby comes to greet me, with my roommate at his side. I asked what was happening, only to be informed that the hill (a group of dorms on north campus) were being attacked by a group of miscellaneous "freedom fighters" for the circle (a group of dorms on south campus). I was overwhelmed by the mob mentality and decided that my throwing arm may come in handy for our small group of warriors. Men from the dorms came out slowly to join the battle as the hill slowly overcame the group of fighters from the circle. The circle retreated home with their tails between their knees and our men gathered. We decided that we would conquer the circle and take over campus. the warriors from the hill followed the rag tag team of circle fighters back to their homes and found a battle already waging. We fought to the best of our abilities, got forced downhill and decided to retreat. We regrouped and readied ourselves with ammo. Many men fell in battle, from both sides, wet and cold with defeat. As men fell or walked away, the few warriors remaining strengthened their resolve and blundered into battle. The men from circle and hill got mixed together and soon enough no one could tell one from another. People were throwing ice, slush, dirt. Whatever they got their hands on was now in the air. The hill was falling. The men were weakening but refused to stop fighting. It was at this point that I got shot in my throwing arm and decided to call it quits. I hope the rest of the men got out that easy.
